VideoBox Review

Date Published: Jul 19, 2005

Introduction

VideoBox.com, formerly known as Climax Corner, is a video download site with a collection of 450 DVDS and 2573 scenes to date. New DVDs are added every day. The biggest asset of this site is its massive, unprotected DVD download content and an incredible price of $9.95 a month.

Video resolution for the high bandwidth version is 480x352 and bitrate averages around 850k VBR. There's also a medium and low resolution option (340x240 and 192x144, respectively). There are no DRM protection on any of the videos. Video clips can be viewed via progressive download, so you don't have to wait for an entire video to download before you can watch the movie. Each DVD is divided into full scene downloads, although narravite opening and closing of each scene sometimes seem to be edited out. Full scenes last usually between 6~16 minutes.

The Good

The biggest thing going for VideoBox is the insanely low price. Nobody out there is offering this amount of movies at a monthly fee this low. Another feature that alot of critics talk about is their javascript enabled user interface that lets you drag and drop the start and end point of the video download, so you can download just a segment of a scene. To be honest, I've actually felt compelled to use that feature only once or twice, but I have to agree it's a cool feature to play around with at least.

If you're coming from a site like Porn DVD Direct or Videosz, then chances are you've seen every DVD title from studios like Red Light District and Zero Tolerance. Fortunately, VideoBox has DVDs from some lesser known (to me anyway) studios like Hollywood Hunter and Noose. For some of those minor studios, you may only find one or two titles, but they still add to the variety and keep things interesting.

VideoBox's search features and options are pretty much standard. You can search by studio, star name, category, or series. There's also a filter option for category, so you can say look for amateurs, and then filter that further by anal, etc. I'm personally not too crazy about this feature, since I never found it useful, but it's a unique feature nonetheless.

The Bad

The one thing that got on my nerves after a while is that every video I downloaded ran at a pitiful 23.9 frame rate. I compared my own DVD rips to the video clips from VideoBox, and frankly, mine just look so much better.

Also, VideoBox DVD selection is good, but from a glance the DVDs tend to be all hardcore amateur niche, where you usually see a girl in a room interviewed by some guy and then after a few minutes she starts sucking on two cocks at once. Many of the videos follow the same exact pattern. There are a few bizarre DVDs and classic features starring my favorites like Veronica Heart, but overall it's tough to find provocative movies to watch. I did enjoy the blow Me Sandwich type of POV duo blowjob videos with Lea De Mae and other European chicks that I think are pretty hot, but many of the other hardcore DVDs with average looking naked chicks fucking like braindead sluts get pretty repetitive and tiresome after a while.

It would also be nice if VideoBox let you download the entire DVD, like Porn DVD Direct does, from beginning to end, in one big file, instead of scenes. Porn DVD Direct isn't cheap, but their videos are definitely worth burning, which I unfortunately can't say for VideoBox.

Another thing: the overall look of VideoBox isn't too striking. The site design is pretty similar to Videosz or an online DVD rental site like Adult DVD Empire. It's a good marketting idea to draw a similarity between a DVD rental site and a video download site, but the difference is a porn site with a members area should offer more than files to download. Otherwise, it can get boring fast. To be fair, the guys at VideoBox does an exceptional job of writing descriptions for the scenes.

Finally, if you're into a particular niche, like mature or bondage, you're going to quickly run out of videos to watch. So far, they only have 3 BSDM DVDs and 4 mature DVDS. Like almost all other DVD download sites, you can browse the member area without signing up so I'd browse around to see how many DVDs they got in the niches you're interested in.

Final Judgement

Since I used to rip DVDs alot, I'm a little critical when it comes to video download sites, so bear with me if I come down overly harsh on VideoBox. The reason I'd join a video download site instead of renting DVDs online is No waiting for the DVD to popup in the mailbox. But immediate gratification isn't all that great if the videos I download aren't at least decent quality.. Unfortunately, folks at VideoBox need to learn how to rip their DVDs, because stuttering videos are just not enjoyable for me to watch. Their java enhanced user interface that let you download a part of a scene is cool, but personally, I'd appreciate the option of downloading the entire video alot more. So here's the bottom line. If you're looking to watch semi-decent quality videos without shelling out any real dough, VideoBox won't dissappoint. But if you're a DiVX freak who spends hours ripping DVDs, then check out other sites like 99BB, Videosz or Deluxe Pass instead.
